Golden Eagle volleyball earns road sweep of Northwest College

POWELL, WY – The #19 Laramie County Community College volleyball team was in fine form on Friday night as they made the long road trip to Northwest College and made it count with a three-set sweep of the Trappers, 25-15, 25-11, 25-18 to move to 18-4 on the year and 3-0 in conference action.

The opening set saw the host Trappers jump out to the early lead, but LCCC didn't allow them to hold it for long as they took their first lead at 3-2 and wouldn't give it back for the rest of the set, extending the lead to 18-11 late in the first to force a NWC time out.

"Midway through the first set we were almost to the number of errors that we anticipated making in the full set but then our players really buckled down and cut the errors down and that's why we finished strong and got back into our rhythm," Head Coach Zach Shaver said.

LCCC would trade points through the rest of the set to go up 1-0 after a 25-15 set win, finishing the set on a 7-4 run.

The Golden Eagles wasted no time in the second set to make a statement, rolling to a 12-3 lead after 15 points to take control of the set. LCCC pushed the lead to double digits at 13-3 and for the remainder of the set held the Trappers off balance to go up 2-0 after controlling the second set 25-11.

Shaver said the team's focus in preparation was big in the two-set advantage.

"We did a good job scouting them. We knew where we wanted to serve, and our players missed very few serves and got them out of system and that resulted in easy points."

Northwest tried to rally back in the opening points of the third set and had a high-water mark of 11-7 midway through the set. The Golden Eagles stiffened their resolve in the middle of the set and after tying it at 11, 12, and 13, they were able to take momentum from the Trappers and pull ahead to take a 21-18 lead late.

The next four points all went to LCCC, and they finished off the sweep with a 25-18 win in the final set, one in which the Golden Eagles bench got most of the opportunities.

"Everybody works hard, and everybody deserves to get in there some," Shaver said. "It's always exciting when somebody gets in and does something with a block or a kill or an ace that didn't get to start the match. That gets everybody fired up."

The Golden Eagles had eight players combine for 32 kills, led by Addyson McArthur's 10 kill performance.

Kate Ohlsen continued her strong performance as the setter with 17 assists. She was helped by Nicole Shaver's nine assist match and saw five more come from Sadie Christiansen.

The LCCC libero also had 14 digs and 14 serve receives and Demi Stauffenberg added 11 digs and 16 serve receives as the only Golden Eagles with double digits in both categories.

The Golden Eagles move to 3-0 in Region IX North action and look to win their fourth straight on Saturday afternoon when they travel to Riverton, Wyoming for a match with Central Wyoming College.

Opening serve of the match is scheduled for 2:00 pm. Streaming information can be found online at www.golccc.com.
