LCCC Downs NJC in Region IX Tourney First Round

Aubrey Gessner scored in the 5th minute of the game and led the Golden Eagles into the Region IX semi-final spot next weekend with a 7-0 victory over the NJC women's soccer team Saturday at home.

Gessner's goal was created as Shauni Griffiths played a ball out wide to Gessner who took the shot from about 20yds out putting it near post in the upper corner. She then played Jemma House through for 1v1 with the keeper who scored in the 9th minute. Nikita Woods made it 3-0 a minute later as Abby Morillon lofted a ball to Woods who cut the ball back at the endline and finished near post. Griffiths added her 14th goal of the season minutes before halftime to put LCCC ahead 4-0. Morillon picked up the assist on the play. House would make it 5-0 in the last minute of the half as Griffiths chipped a ball over the top to House who finished.

Woods created a nice scoring opportunity for Morillon in the 69th minute as Morillon made an underlapping run and was feed and shot got past the keeper from 18yds out. LCCC would get one more goal as Maria Da Silveira played Woods through in the 80th minute and tucked her shot away. Goalkeepers Jess Urquhart and Kelly Morine split time in goal with Urquhart having to make one save in the game.

LCCC returns to the pitch Saturday at 11 a.m. when Golden Eagles will face Western Wyoming Community College in a Region IX semi-final match on the campus of Metro State University in Denver, Colorado.
