Women pick up first win of 2024 over Air Force Prep

CHEYENNE, WY - The Laramie County Community College women's basketball team used a tough defense to take down Air Force Prep for the second time this season with a convincing 65-35 win over the Huskies at Storey Gym on Saturday afternoon.

The game started out very sluggish for both sides and only seven points were on the board after the opening quarter expired with LCCC leading 4-3.

LCCC was able to dig into the offensive playbook in the second quarter in part thanks to a push inside where Lylah Spring accounted for six of her 14 total points. The Golden Eagles also found the three point shot in the quarter, earning three of them from freshman Jessica Bakhsh, Kelly Megown, and Alba Garrido-Lamas to take a 22-7 lead into the half.

Head Coach Ayana McWilliams said after the game her message in the halftime locker room was to keep the momentum going, and the Golden Eagles certainly did that in the third quarter. Spring was joined in her assault on the paint by Blanche Toualeu who secured a double-double in the third quarter with eight points in the frame to join Spring in that feat. LCCC didn't make any three's in the frame, but expanded their lead none-the-less with a 26 point quarter from inside the paint.

It was more of the same inside in the fourth, and LCCC was able empty their bench on the way to a dominant 65-35 win at home.

Toualeu was the one to watch in the game, with a career high 20 rebounds to go with her 16 points. The 20 rebounds tied a school record that was set by Haylie Anderson in December of 2018, and tied earlier this season by Spring against the same Air Force Prep team.

Spring for her side finished with a balanced line of seven rebounds and 12 points. Megown and Tamara Smith-White were the only other Golden Eagles to finish in double-digits with Megown adding 11 and Smith-White pitching in 13 off of the bench.

As a team, LCCC finished shooting 38.8 percent from the field despite only going 3-19 from beyond the three point line. The win also snapped a four-game losing streak for the Golden Eagles and was their first win of the 2024 portion of the schedule.

The Golden Eagles are now 7-9 on the season with a game against Gillette College on Tuesday scheduled to open the conference portion of the year. More information on this game can be found at www.golccc.com
