Golden Eagles move to 2-0 after downing McCook 57-50

McCOOK, NE – The Laramie County Community College women's basketball team moved to 2-0 on the season thanks to a second half rally against McCook Community College to defeat the Indians 57-50 on Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Eagles went up early in the game and after a quarter of play led MCC 15-14 and only built on that in the second quarter to take a 29-24 lead into the break.

The Indians went on a run of their own in the second half as late in the third quarter, trailing 37-28, McCook went on a 10-0 run to go in front 38-37 and put LCCC on their back heels, finishing the third quarter ahead by three at 42-39.

The fourth quarter saw LCCC get back to what they do best which is play defense and they held McCook to just eight points in the final frame while putting up 18 of their own to rally back and take the win 57-50.

"We just had way to many turnovers," McWilliams said of the run they gave up in the third quarter. "We had 15 turnovers in the first half and another 14 in the second half and any time you turn the ball over you can look at the shot differential and it's fortunate we came out on the victorious side."

The Golden Eagles were led in scoring by Lylah Spring's 19-point performance which included an 8-11 showing at the free throw line. Blanche Toualeu and Tamar Smith-White both finished with 13 points as well.

"They are just taking advantage of their opportunities and their moments," McWilliams said of Toualeu and Smith-White. "Each kid is taking it one possession at a time and adjusting to the American game and having some success."

The team shot 45 percent from the field.

Springs 19 points were paired with a nine rebound, three block game, and she led the team in both categories.

The Golden Eagles finished the game plus-3 in steals and plus-8 in rebounding which proved to be big in a game that saw them turn the ball over 26 times.

"I think we are going to be a solid team. We are just young and doing what young teams do. A lot of highs and a lot of lows, but at the end of the day, the basketball gods have been on our side, and we've just been in the right position at the right time," McWilliams said.

LCCC will have the week to prepare for their next contests when they travel to Rock Springs for two days of tournament action when they play Snow College on Friday at 5:00 pm before turning around to play Western Nebraska Community College at Noon on Saturday.
