Women’s Basketball Falls to #24 Gillette College

CHEYENNE, Wyo. – The Laramie County Community College women's basketball team was back in Region IX North action Saturday afternoon, as they hosted #24 Gillette College. The Golden Eagles found tough-sledding in this one on the defensive end against one of the stronger offenses they'll face this season. Gillette is now 20-2 and is 6-0 in Region IX North play. The high-scoring affair against the Golden Eagles resulted in LCCC dropping the match by a final score of 80-64.

The Golden Eagles came into the afternoon's contest anticipating a matchup against one of the top teams in the region. The Pronghorns showcased their offensive attack by shooting 45 percent from the field and 34.8 percent from the three-point line.

Gillette jumped out to the early lead in the first quarter outscoring the Golden Eagles 26-13. LCCC opened the second quarter on an 8-2 run to chip at the lead but Gillette pushed it back to double-digits. Gillette led 41-28 at the half. The second half saw LCCC get off to a slow start but closed the quarter on a good run. The Pronghorns would connect on several three-pointers in the fourth quarter to run away with the lead.

The Golden Eagles did force Gillette into 27 turnovers while the Golden Eagles committed 16 in the contest. The Golden Eagles only managed to shoot 28.6 percent from the field and only 20.7 percent from behind the arc.

Haylie Anderson (Clearfield, Utah) led the way for the Golden Eagles with 13 points, a block and a steal. The Clearfield, Utah product continues to be an impact player for the Golden Eagles leading them in scoring. Karly Mathern (Windsor, Colorado) was the only other Golden Eagle to score in double figures with 10 points.

Golden Eagles women's basketball has now fallen to 15-7 overall and 4-2 in Region IX North play which keeps them in the top half. LCCC returns to action at home this upcoming Wednesday, where they take on Northwest College in a Region IX North contest. The matchup between the two squads will tip-off at 5:30 p.m.
