Defensive Effort Secures Eight Point Win Over Mustangs for Women’s Hoops

ROCK SPRINGS – Wrapping up a busy road trip of women's hoops, the Laramie County Community College Golden Eagles traveled to Western Wyoming Community College on Wednesday evening. In a contest that saw consistently strong defensive effort from the Navy and Gold through 40 minutes of action, The Golden Eagles paced the Lady Mustangs to a final score of 58-50.

Bouncing back after suffering their first loss in Region IX North play, LCCC found no trouble finding their fourth Region IX North win on the season against WWCC. Through the first few minutes of action, the Mustangs held their own and traded leads until about the five minute mark. From that point on, a collective effort from multiple Golden Eagles on both ends of the floor was showcased. The Golden Eagles ran away with the lead and never looked back. With seven minutes left in the second quarter, back-to-back threes by Haylie Anderson (Clearfield, Utah) and Sam Hester (Saratoga Springs, Utah) gave the Golden Eagles a strong advantage by putting them up over the Mustangs. The Navy and Golden headed into halftime with 33-26 lead.

The second half said much of the same story as the first. In the third quarter, the Golden Eagles held the Mustangs to 10 total points while the Navy and Gold managed to score 13. This manufactured the Golden Eagles' lead to 10 at the end of the third quarter. LCCC was able to close out the game and secure the win.

Anderson recorded 17 points and Ja'Kia Wells (Mesquite, Texas) added three assists to lead LCCC's offensive efforts. Abby Garreaud (Magna, Utah) recorded another double-double by dropping 12 points in addition to 10 rebounds.

With the win, LCCC women's hoops improves to 15-6 overall and a Region IX North record of 4-1. As the team looks ahead to their next opponent, they will be hosting #24 Gillette College on Saturday. The afternoon game is set for a 2 p.m. tip-off.
