Thompson's goal helps Golden Eagles to district title

CHEYENNE, WY - The No. 4 ranked Laramie County Community College Golden Eagles (15-1-1) won their third consecutive Northwest Plains District title, beating Otero (9-5) 1-0 on Saturday afternoon.

The only goal of the game came in the 40th minute when Eric Thompson (Fort Collins, Colo.) beat the keeper at the far post with a shot from 18 yards out, his second goal of the season, giving the Golden Eagles a 1-0 lead.

LCCC controlled play in the first half, nearly opening the scoring in the seventh minute as Carlos Vargas (Heber City, Utah) had his shot go just wide. Abe Lopez (Boulder, Colo.) took his chance in the 14th minute but was denied as Otero's goalkeeper punched the ball over the bar.

The Golden Eagles defense stepped up in the second half as Otero enjoyed more of the possession but was kept off the board as Declan Domyan (Sandton, South Africa) stopped the only Rattlers' shot on target.

The Golden Eagles won their fourth consecutive Region IX title and their third straight Northwest Plains District championship, punching their ticket to the NJCAA National Tournament.
