Golden Eagles breeze past Thunderbirds

CHEYENNE, WY - The No. 7 ranked Laramie County Community College Golden Eagles (11-1-1) scored a pair of first-half goals, beating Casper (9-5-1) 2-0 on Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Eagles and Thunderbirds traded possession early as both teams tried to settle into the game. The Golden Eagles had the first chance of the game on a set-piece that Carlos Vargas (Heber City, Utah) put just over the bar.

It was Vargas who would put the first goal on the board, beating the keeper with a header off a rebound, putting the Golden Eagles in front, 1-0, in the 24th minute. The goal was Vargas' team-leading 11th of the season.

Seven minutes later, the Golden Eagles added to their lead. Noe Ortiz-Pena (Aurora, Colo.) sent in a cross into the box that was tipped past the keeper by Tanner Smith (Northglenn, Colo.) pushing the Golden Eagles' advantage to 2-0 in the 41st minute.

The Golden Eagles finish the regular season on Monday, hosting Central Wyoming at 12:00 pm.
