Golden Eagles storm back in second half

CHEYENNE, WY - The No. 11 ranked Laramie County Community College Golden Eagles (5-1) scored four second-half goals to come back and beat the No. 20 ranked Casper College Thunderbirds (3-4-1) on Saturday afternoon. 

Casper scored the only goal of the first half, taking a 1-0 lead in the 35th minute on a penalty. The Golden Eagles were held off the scoreboard in the first half despite recording 15 shots. 

LCCC drew level in the 50th minute thanks to Bryan Vazquez (Denver, Colo.) who scored his first goal of the season on a feed from Jonathan Jimenez-Flores (Longmont, Colo.).

The Golden Eagles took the lead nine minutes later as Carlos Vargas (Heber City, Utah) scored his team-leading seventh goal of the season off a Vazquez assist, giving the Golden Eagles a 2-1 lead. 

Omar Castruita (Boulder, Colo.) added to the lead in the 87th minute with his fourth goal of the season and extended the advantage to 3-1. Castruita has scored a goal in four consecutive games. 

Tanner Smith (Northglenn, Colo.) capped off the afternoon with his second goal of the season, scoring in the 90th minute thanks to assists from Cole Van Holland (Canton, S.D.) and Jimenez-Flores to push the lead to 4-1.

The Golden Eagles head to Sterling, Colo. on Wednesday when they take on the Northeastern Plainsmen at 1:30 pm.
