Golden Eagles soar to 90-81 opening round win over Western Wyoming

CHEYENNE, WY – The Laramie County Community College men's basketball team picked up a come from behind win over Western Wyoming Community College on Saturday afternoon at Storey Gym, punching their ticket to the Region IX Quarterfinals in Scottsbluff this week after taking down the Mustangs 90-81.

The game started out a bit shaky for LCCC, falling behind by 10 points in the opening four minutes with the only score coming on a goaltending call on a Jordan Reed layup, and the Golden Eagles were down 12-2 after the opening six minutes in a defensive battle.

LCCC got back on track with a bucket from Ejay Scroggins just before the first media timeout and that was when the rally began. Threes started to fall for LCCC including two each in the half from Scroggins, Davion Butler, and Justin Daniels, and by the end of the first half the lead was just one at 36-35 in favor of the Mustangs.

The second half opened with more offense from the Golden Eagles who ripped off an 8-0 run to go up 43-36 before free throws ended the scoring drought for WWCC, but the damage was done.

Reed and Scroggins continued their takeover of the game and the duo combined to go 12-13 from the free throw line with a steady diet of inside scoring to boot and other than a short burst by the Mustangs to tie the game at 43, LCCC never trailed again in the game.

Western Wyoming did rally back to within two possessions several times only to see the Golden Eagles rebuild the lead to double digits on the way to the eventual 90-81 victory thanks to a 55-point second half.

Reed led the offense for LCCC with 24 points, followed closely by Scroggins who was 8-12 from the field for a 22-point night. Bulter also chipped in 18 points.

LCCC won despite losing the rebounding battle, which saw the Mustangs pick up 20 offensive rebounds inside and 43 total boards to just 27 from the Golden Eagles.

That was countered by a 50.8 percent shooting night for LCCC, who also had one of their best nights of the season from the foul line, shooting 18-22 from the stripe, and a 12-24 night from three.

They also were able to force 21 turnovers by WWCC.

The win moves the Golden Eagles into the Region IX quarterfinals this week in Scottsbluff, Nebraska at the Cougar Palace where they will play Trinidad State College who earned the second see from the south. Opening tip is scheduled for 1:00 pm.

The winner of that game will face the winner of Gillette College and McCook Community College, who upset Northeastern Junior College in the opening round, directly after at 3:00 pm.

The other two matchups in the quarterfinals feature Casper College facing Otero College at 5:00 pm and host Western Nebraska Community College against Northwest College who upset Central Wyoming College in their opening round game. Tip for the final game is schedule for 7:00 pm.
