LCCC Beat Air Force Prep, 108-92

Cheyenne, WY – The Laramie County Community College Golden Eagles stepped out of South Sub Region play and defeated Air Force Prep 108-92 at the RAC on Wednesday evening.

Sophomore Dominik Heinzl (Uzov, Czech Republic) had a season-high scoring effort with 24 points. Heinzl finished the game shooting 10-of-13 from the floor and 4-of-5 from the free throw line. Heinzl also stepped up big on defense, forcing the Huskies into some difficult shots near the rim.

Freshman guard Da'Zhon Wyche (Anchorage, Alaska) followed with 20 points and 10 assists, while sophomore Ola Ayodele (London, England) dropped 19 points. Harrison Meads (New Plymouth, New Zealand) and Alfonzo Anderson (Newark, New Jersey) rounded out the double-digit scoring with 13 and 11 respectively. Anderson led the Golden Eagles efforts on the glass, pulling down seven rebounds.

With the win, Laramie County improved to 14-9 overall.

For the game, the Golden Eagles shot 42-of-67 (.627) from the field, including a 10-of-18 (.556) effort from deep. LCCC made 14-of-22 free throws and won the turnover battle 23-9 with 11 steals in the game.

AFP finished the game shooting 33-of-60 (.550) from the floor, 10-of-23 (.435) from deep, and 16-of-18 (.889) from the charity stripe. The Huskies won the battle of the boards 34-24.

In the first half, AFP capitalized on a slow start by the Golden Eagles. Laramie County went the first five minutes with just two field goals as the Huskies built an 11-6 advantage.

After a timeout, Landon Taliaferro and Wyche got the Golden Eagles going by burying back-to-back long distance shots as the Golden Eagles jumped ahead with 13:20 left in the half. Again, LCCC used a little run to push the lead to eight at the 7:27 mark in the half.

With under five minutes left in the half, the Golden Eagles pushed the lead to 11 points behind a pair of baskets from Heinzl, 37-26. The Huskies answered with a Matt Weir 3-pointer, but LCCC made a series of runs to close out the half with a 10-point advantage, 48-38.

Laramie County finished the first half shooting 55.6 percent from the field (20-of-36) and 46.2 percent from beyond the 3-point arc (6-of-13). The Huskies drilled six first-half triples while shooting 50 percent from deep.

In the second half, LCCC established a 12-point, 50-38 advantage by the 18:40 mark. However, the Huskies immediately cut the deficit to seven points on a Bryce Hughes layup and Chris Joyce triple. LCCC would push the lead back to 10 at the midway point of the second half, leading 72-62.

During the final 9:00, Air Force Prep tightened up the defense, causing back to back turnovers and forcing the Golden Eagles into tough shots. The defensive stance generated a 10-3 run by the Huskies.

A Wyche three and steal quickly regained the lead for the Golden Eagles. A set of turnovers by the Huskies pushed the lead back to 10 with 4:40 remaining in the game, 89-79. The Golden Eagles closed out the game on a 19-11 run for the 108-92 victory.

The LCCC basketball team will be back in action on Saturday, Feb. 4 at 4 p.m. against Northwest Kansas Technical College in Goodland, Kansas.
