LCCC's Overwatch 2 team falls to seventh seeded Northwest College in opening round

CHEYENNE, WY – The Laramie County Community College esports team was in action on Friday afternoon as the Overwatch 2 team took to the controllers for their opening round game against the Northwest College Trappers to open their postseason play but fell to the seventh seed 3-0.

In the opening game of control, the Golden Eagles saw a furious come back denied getting to 89 percent before the Trappers reached 100 percent control. The Trappers used the momentum to get the early lead in the second game and despite another try at rallying, the Golden Eagles fell 2-0 heading into a game of Push.

Both sides played even in at the start of the round, with was a race to see who could move a package the furthest, but Northwest would take a large lead midway through. The Golden Eagles were able to slow down the Trappers just after they were able to get their package to 100 meters, but couldn’t make any headway on their own side, and fell 115-33 by the rounds end to fall behind 2-0 on the match.

The game moved to Hybrid, and Laramie County put up a great distance in their possession of the payload going 97.64 meters. Northwest countered with a quick assault of their own and closed out the match 3-0 to eliminate the Golden Eagles.

Despite the loss, Head Coach Cindy Benites said she was proud of the effort the team made after having to make changes to the lineup mid-season.

“We had some new editions to the team,” she said. “Our gameplay changed and we started winning things that we were losing before, but there is always room for improvement.”

Having to match up with a team they had played in the regular season gave them a chance to compare how the new lineup would fare, and Benites said it did throw off the Trappers at times.

“I think we surprised them in that we were a little bit tougher but they obviously know what they are doing. It was a tough loss but it happens.”

The Overwatch team was still the first to make it to the postseason in the game for the Golden Eagles and will be back with most of the group returning for the spring campaign.
