Golden Eagles move to second in Region IX North with sweep of Northwest

CHEYENNE, WY – The Laramie County Community College volleyball team picked up an important win on Saturday in Region IX North action with a sweep of the Northwest College Trappers (25-23, 25-15, 25-22), improving to 3-1 in conference play and picking up their first sweep since September 6th.

The win was paced by a strong start to the opening set. The team was able to break free from the Trappers about 20 points in and surged to a 21-16 lead to take control. The Trappers did bring it back to within one with a late push but fell 25-23 in the opener.

Set two was much more friendly for the home side.

The Golden Eagles never trailed in the set and after Northwest made a 3-1 push to bring the set back to a 10-9 score, LCCC responded to win eight of the next ten serves to take an 18-11 advantage.

The rest of the set would be mathematics and LCCC pushed ahead to a 2-0 lead in the match after taking it 25-15.

The third was much more interesting, particularly the start and finishes.

Northwest and LCCC went back and forth in the opening points, but it was LCCC that picked up the early separation, going ahead 11-7 and they would keep the four-point lead for much of the set. At 17-13 the Trappers made their move.

A 6-2 run gave Northwest the lead at 21-19 and it seemed like the pendulum had swung to them and the match was heading to a fourth set. But the Golden Eagles dug their talons in and evened the set at 22 and would go on to win the set and match 25-22 for the sweep.

Adriana Deming had one of her best games as a Golden Eagle with eleven kills and a .391 hitting percentage. McKienna Kehl also had a career game with a new career best of nine kills. Lea Susoy added another seven as the team spread the ball around to seven different attackers in the match.

Addison Schreurs had another 31 assists in the match and picked up her 30th ace of the season with two more on the match to bring her weekend total to six.

On the back row, Savannah Cummings had another strong game with 16 digs, joined by Schreurs and Susoy with 13 more each. LCCC had six blocks in the match at the net also.

The Golden Eagles will be on the road in their next action with a Friday night trip to Casper College on the way, along with a trip to Western Wyoming Community College on Saturday. Friday's game is the first half of the "Flight for a Cure" nights with the Thunderbirds, with proceeds being donated to cancer research.
