TWIN FALLS, ID – The Laramie County Community College volleyball team split a pair of matches on Friday at the College of Southern Idaho's Starr Invitational, taking down Edmonds Community College in straight sets before falling to Snow College 3-0.
LCCC 3 Edmonds 0 – 25-21, 25-20, 25-18
The opening set for the Golden Eagles started out with a big run to take a 10-3 lead and to put the Tritons on their back heels. That was enough of a cushion to hold onto the lead through the set and take the opener 25-21 after a late rally by Edmonds to come back.
LCCC kept the momentum rolling in the second set early with a 4-1 advantage out of the gate, but Edmonds pushed back with a 7-0 run of their own to take their first lead of the match at 8-4.
The Golden Eagles accepted the challenge and stormed back to tie it at eight on the next service run, and after trading leads to a 16 all tie, LCCC broke away to go up 19-16, and from there finished the set out with a 6-1 run to take the lead 2-0 in sets.
The final set didn't have as much drama and the Golden Eagles completed their third sweep of the season with a 25-21, 25-20, 25-18 win to start the tournament weekend.
LCCC 0 Snow College 3 – 25-16, 25-19, 25-11
Match two had a different tone for the Golden Eagles who were pushed out of the gate, falling behind the Badgers 9-4 before Head Coach Zach Shaver took a timeout to calm down the team.
LCCC closed the gap to 13-11 over the next ten points but a pair of errors by the Golden Eagles and a block at the net pushed the lead back to five at 16-11. The Golden Eagles wouldn't threaten in the first set again and dropped it 25-16.
Set two saw the Golden Eagles bring the first big blows to the match, pushing the Badgers onto the defensive and taking a 6-4 lead in the opening ten points, paced by Maria Rawlek with a kill and a pair of aces.
Snow rallied back to win the next five points, but a tone was set, and the two sides settled into a game of runs, with each team leading by as many as three.
The Golden Eagles seemed to have momentum on their side at 17-14 having just quieted a Snow rally. The Badgers dug in though and finished the match on an 11-2 run to win the set 25-19 and go up 2-0.
LCCC couldn't find their footing from there on and set three was a difficult one. Tied at four Snow pushed ahead 8-4 and used a strong blocking and serving game to keep the Golden Eagles off balance, collecting five blocks and three aces on the way to a 25-11 set win.
The tournament stiffens up in terms of competition for the Golden Eagles as Saturday features a pair of teams in the top ten of the most recent polls. The morning opens up at 8:00 AM when LCCC faces #10 Utah State University – Eastern and the tournament will close with a match against #2 Miami-Dade College at 2:00 pm.
