LCCC volleyball picks up 3-1 win over Central Arizona in first ever match played at the Blue FCU RAC

CHEYENNE, WY – For the first time in over two years, the Laramie County Community College volleyball team hosted a match on campus, as they welcomed the Golden Eagles fans to the newly renovated Blue FCU RAC for the beginning of the Springhill Suites Cheyenne Invitational and took down the visiting Central Arizona College Vaqueras 3-1 (20-25, 25-18, 25-20, 25-11) to send the crowd home happy.

The match opened with some auspicious beginnings, falling behind 3-7 in the opening set before rallying back to even the match at eight and forcing a timeout by the Vaqueras. The Golden Eagles rolled off a 4-1 run to take the 12-9 advantage before some miscues allowed CAC to go on a 12-4 run of their own and take a commanding 21-16 lead.

LCCC shook off the opening set loss and came out to play in the second set. After the game was tied at five, they pushed out a 4-0 run and eventually grew the lead to 17-10 before Central Arizona was force to call a timeout to try and settle down their attack.

That didn't do much to give them a run back into it and LCCC finished the set with a 25-18 win after trading points the rest of the way.

The third set was controlled again by LCCC in the early moments. After going up 6-2, the Golden Eagles held off a charge that tied the game at six, but never let the Vaqueras take the lead back and pushed the advantage back to four at 10-6 and 14-10. From there it went back to a back-and-forth display of offense and the Golden Eagles never trailed again, finishing off the win 25-20 to take full momentum with a 2-1 set lead.

In the final set, the Central Arizona began to feel the pressure and after LCCC broke in front they watched the Golden Eagles finish the match on a 15-4 run and closed a dominant 3-1 win 25-11.

The LCCC offense was paced by Lea Susoy who finished the night with 12 kills in her first match of the season. Elysiana Fonseca added 11 for her third match with double digit kills. Addison Schreurs tallied 38 assists in the match and the team picked up 41 digs and had eight blocks by the end of the night.

The Springhill Suites Cheyenne Invitational continues on Friday with nine more matches held at the Blue FCU RAC. The Golden Eagles will have the nightcap when they face off with #12 New Mexico Military College.
