De Stefano leads Golden Eagles past Trappers

CHEYENNE, WY - The Laramie County Community College Golden Eagles (9-9, 1-0) opened up conference play with a 3-2 win over Northwest (14-3, 0-1) on Friday night. 

After a back-and-forth start to the first set, Northwest stormed out to a 20-17 lead before the Golden Eagles would rally to take the first set, 25-22

Freshman Michela De Stefano (Rome, Italy) recorded a career-high 23 kills, passing her previous high of 12 which was set back on August 21 against Colorado Northwestern. De Stefano also recorded 13 digs and three blocks in the win. 

The second and third sets belonged to the Trappers who took the second set 25-12 before taking the third set 25-15.

The Golden Eagles and Trappers played a tight fourth set that saw the Golden Eagles winning 25-23 to force a fifth set.

Shae Halls (Carpenter, Wyo.) tallied 17 digs while Rigan McInerney (Gillette, Wyo.) had nine kills and 13 digs. 

LCCC battled back in the fifth set to win 15-13, taking the match 3-2.

Shelby Veenstra (Twin Falls, Idaho) finished the match with 32 assists and two blocks while Kalme Moncavo (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) had seven kills and three blocks.

The Golden Eagles are back in action Saturday afternoon, hosting No. 14 ranked Central Wyoming at 3:00 pm.
