Golden Eagles Pull Wins Over Midland and Lamar

STERLING, Colo. – The Laramie County Community College women's volleyball team took another two victories on day two of the Pizza Hut Invitational against Midland College and Lamar Community College Saturday. LCCC finished the weekend 4-0.

The Golden Eagles defeated Midland in four sets 25-16, 21-25, 28-26 and 25-22 and Lamar Community College in three straight sets of 25-19, 25-21 and 25-20 and move to 10-6 on the year.

Against Midland, Kyle Meltzer (Fort Collins, Colorado) led the team with 16 digs. Gwen Sheldon (Loveland, Colorado) led with 22 assists. Kasandra Sturges (Parker, Colorado once again fought hard defensively for the Golden Eagles with 12 digs and 21 assists. Sturges is now averaging 6.56 assists per set.

On the offense, Avery Nelson (Colorado Springs, Colorado) had a total of 16 kills with a hit percentage of .353. Payton Stack (Casper, Wyoming) had 11 kills and Elizabeth Clark had seven kills.

Against Lamar, Kylie Martin (Gypsum, Colorado) led the team with 10 digs and three serving aces. Sturges added nine digs in the match. Clark had seven blocks.

On the offense, Nelson had a total of 13 kills while Martin added 10 kills with a hitting percentage of .450. Sheldon dished out 23 assists.

"This was a good weekend for us," said head coach Austin Albers. "We built off our strong play from yesterday and started to mesh as a team. Offensively, we were pretty potent today and our setters did a good job of orchestrating our offense. The trick for us now is to treat this 4-0 weekend like a 0-4 weekend and stay hungry to improve the little things in practice this week. We can't get comfortable with where we're at and we need to keep building."

The next game will be Friday, Sept. 21st at 7 p.m. against Casper College in the Region IX North opener.
