CHEYENNE, WY – The Laramie County Community College women's soccer team all but clinched a home game in the Region IX tournament with a 4-1 victory over Western Nebraska Community College on Saturday afternoon.
LCCC didn't wait to take control of the pace of the match, possessing the ball well and limiting the WNCC sorties into their half of the field.
That would result in quite a bit of offense for LCCC who would take 16 shots in the game, eleven of them on goal. One of those was an opening strike by Dani O'Leary on a throw in from Aubrey Yantis that set the sophomore up to make it 1-0 in the 17th minute.
Just seven minutes later O'Leary was at it again, this time on a through ball from Haley Pierson that set her up for a one-on-one with the keeper that made it 2-0 in the 24th.
Both sides would level out for the final 20 minutes of the first half and the score went into the break with the two-goal lead for the Golden Eagles.
It didn't take long for the LCCC attack to find the net in the second half either. Four minutes into the second half, Alyssa Taft was able to scoot a ball to Giselle Heck that gave another one-on-one with the goalie and Heck was able to drive through her first goal of the game and in turn helped Alyssa to her first assist of her career.
Western Nebraska did find an answer back just three minutes later to get onto the board when Millie Selfe put one past the framework from 18 yards out to trim the deficit to two.
That didn't last long though and Aubrey Yantis sealed the match in the 54th minute when O'Leary was able to earn a penalty kick that Yantis rocketed past the goalie to the right post and put the LCCC women up 4-1.
The Golden Eagles dominated almost every facet of the match the win moves them to fourth in the Region IX standings and all but guarantees the Golden Eagles a home match in the opening round of the playoffs.
The Golden Eagles will face off with Central Wyoming College (3-7-1, 3-5) and Northwest College (7-3-1, 5-2) this weekend. The matches against Central Wyoming will not be streamed. Matches with Northwest College should be on the Trappers YouTube channel.
