Second half surge powers LCCC past Trinidad State College in 9-0 win

TRINIDAD, CO – After a slow offensive start in the first half the Laramie County Community College women's soccer team took control of their match with the Trinidad State College Trojans and rolled to a 9-0 win on Saturday afternoon.

"We played an opponent that gave us time and space to move the ball, and we finally showcased in a game that we can do that and it felt really good at the end knowing that a lot of our girls were moving off the ball and the goals that came with it," Head Coach Lugo Arenas said.

The attack was very balanced on the day with seven players scoring and it was a pair of familiar faces that found the back of the net in the first half to get the offense rolling.

In the 17th minute, Danielle O'Leary took a pass from Jentrie Porter and finished it from 18 yards out only to be followed one minute later by a strike from Aubrey Yantis after Porter set up the Rock Springs, Wyoming sophomore up a one-on-one run that put LCCC up 2-0.

The offense went quiet for the rest of the opening 45 minutes but only two minutes into the second half it struck again when O'Leary was fed the ball again by Porter on a cross that was finished for O'Leary's seventh goal of the season.

Yantis again followed her fellow sophomore in the 58th minute with her second goal of the match as O'Leary this time did the giving on a corner kick that Yantis headed into the goal.

LCCC surged ahead even more in the final 20 minutes where five of their goals would be scored.

In the 70th, Hailey Grillas made it 5-0 from six yards out on a feed from Emma Cortez. Cortez then took her opportunity to get back onto the scoreboard and a pass from 45 yards out by Yantis set up Cortez to make it 6-0 in the 75th minute.

The balance from the team in the final 20 minutes was something that Arena's was proud of his team for showing.

"I think that spoke highly on their character. It's not about them and building up their accolades, it's a we and as long as we get the win it doesn't matter how it goes in."

Just two minutes later, Madi Moore finished her first goal of her collegiate career with an unassisted goal from 18 yards out.

Porter wasn't one to be left out of the scoring and added a goal to her three assists after Jayda Kenison got her the ball 16 yards out and made it 8-0 in the 79th.

One final strike from LCCC would cap off the scoring when Celeste Jimenez-Montero picked up her second goal of the weekend on a Giselle Heck corner to close the match in the 86th minute.

The Golden Eagles dominated the game from start to finish on the defensive side. Trinidad State was not able to get off any shots in the game and took no corner kicks. Meanwhile, LCCC finished the match with 46 shots and 13 corners. 23 of those shots would be on goal.

Grillas got the start in net for LCCC to earn the win and was replaced in the second half by Jenna Feldman for the combined clean sheet.

The Golden Eagles return home after the short road trip for a single match with Western Nebraska on Saturday afternoon at 3:30 pm. The match is sophomore day and more information on the match and LCCC schedule can be found at www.golccc.com.
