Early offense propels LCCC Women's Soccer to 4-0 win over Lamar

CHEYENNE, WY – It was a quick start for the LCCC women's soccer team on Friday afternoon and that was just a taste of what was to come as they rolled to a 4-0 win over Lamar Community College, moving to 4-4-1 on the year and 2-2 in Region IX play.

The opening goal on a rip to the back of the net from freshman Jentrie Porter for her first of the season in the fifth minute. It was set up by a free kick into the box and after rolling out to her at the top of the 18-yard box, she finished it over the top of the Lamar keeper.

"Just to finally get a goal feels really good," Porter said. "All I really remember is one of the girls headed it out and I didn't think about it, I just hit it with my left foot and was hoping it went over the keeper and dropped and it did."

"Jentrie's played a lot of minutes this year and had a lot of opportunities so for her to find the back of the net on that situation, I think we were all just ecstatic for her," Head Coach Lugo Arenas echoed.

Seventeen minutes later, Danielle O'Leary added to the lead with a great break on a ball down the right sideline from Peyton Erlenbaugh as the sophomores combined to break through the Lamar defense.

That goal took the two teams to the half with a 2-0 lead in favor of the Golden Eagles.

O'Leary wasn't through with her impact on the game and just three minutes into the second half, the English forward found another break in the Lamar defense on a through ball from Charlie Durstche, beating the keeper to the right side to put LCCC up 3-0.

One more assist would go to Durstche four minutes after that when Giselle Heck added her first goal to the tally on another one-on-one break with the goalie.

"Our objective this weekend was to move the ball more and find those open spaces," Arenas said. "I think that is what allowed us to find the gaps and have runners going through. Now that we are building that, it's finding ways to make them count."

From there, the bench received plenty of opportunity to get minutes as Arenas opened the field to almost the entire roster. Arenas said while it doesn't mean they run up the score like some teams may, it does help with experience for the freshman.

"It's really good to watch them get it," Porter added. "It helps give them the confidence they need to know they can compete and helps show the coaches different ways that they do good out there."

The match finished with LCCC taking the convincing win, and the box score just added to the emphatic win. Lamar only took six shots on goal and none in the second half. Meanwhile, LCCC controlled the ball on the attacking half much of the game and took 27 shots including 14 on frame.

Both Rebecca Sargent and Jenna Feldmann spent time in net for the Golden Eagles, and while neither recorded a save, they didn't give up any goals either and picked up the fourth clean sheet of the season for LCCC.

The team is right back into the thick of things when they host Northeastern Junior College on Saturday afternoon for the final of a four-game homestand.

"I think these next few games we need to focus on working as a team and playing together. I think it just goes with keeping the possession and staying composed and calm, but the quickness of the play can't slow down even if we do get up by one or two goals," Porter said.

Kickoff is at 3:30 pm and more information can be found at www.golccc.com.
