Golden Eagle women finish clean sheet with 0-0 draw against #11 Monroe Community College

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – After ninety minutes the Laramie County Community College women's soccer team found themselves with a well fought scoreless draw with #11 Monroe Community College to begin a two-game swing against teams from the northeast moving to 1-2-1 on the season.

"I thought both teams had quality chances and it was a perfect test for both them and us," Head Coach Lugo Arenas summarized.

The Golden Eagles saw a back-and-forth pace to the first half with the Tribunes opening with momentum, but LCCC quickly took it back and from there the pendulum continued to swing to either side with only 12 total shots between them.

"It was one of those games where neither team took the bull by the horns and took advantage of their opportunities," Arenas said. "I know they had some really good looks and so did we. It was a game waiting for one mistake to happen and neither team really made a mistake."

Monroe came out with a vengeance in the second half on their home field putting multiple shots on goal with 11 of their 12 finding the gloves of Rebecca Sargent and the only one that didn't miss the net as well.

LCCC's defense really limited the attack of MCC and worked on a strategy from Lugo Arenas to force them to take more set pieces rather than to give up breakaways on goal and he said the idea worked the way he was hoping it would.

"We worked on that in practice. I'd rather give up some corner kicks or throw ins than trying to dribble out of the back and make mistakes and get caught like the last couple of games. I really do think we are a strong group in the air and we also do a really good job on our own set pieces to make them dangerous.

By the games end, the Golden Eagles were able to take the draw and advance to 1-0-1 in their last two games after starting the season 0-2.

The match was highlighted by Sargent's 14 saves which was a new career high for the redshirt freshman. The Golden Eagles took 12 total shots with eight being on goal. They also finished with four corner kicks which all came in the second half.

"(Rebecca) is maturing more and more every game and I think she really needed this one," Arenas said of Sargent's play. "It was one where she was tested but she did her job to keep the clean sheet and keep us in the game."

The team will be back in action on Saturday morning when they face off with the Harford Community College Owls who started the season 2-0 with a pair of home wins without allowing a goal.

"We've watched film, and the team has the scouting report, and I think we are well aware of some of the stronger pieces that they carry. They have a few kids that are pretty quick on their feet and as long as we slow them down then I think we'll be fine," said Arenas.

Kickoff is scheduled for 10:00 AM MDT. Streaming information can be found at www.golccc.com.
