SALT LAKE CITY, UT – The season opener for the Laramie County Community College women's soccer team didn't go as planned with the #14 ranked Golden Eagles falling to the #6 Salt Lake Community College Bruins on the road in a 4-0 decision.
"I think our inexperience is really starting to hit us right now," Head Coach Lugo Arenas said. "We are returning some sophomores, but I think just figuring out who our go to players and who is going to step up on the field is. Part of that is just growing pains and we knew that was going to come."
The Bruins took command of the game early, not allowing the Golden Eagles to leave their half of the field often in the opening 15 minutes and took advantage by putting a pair of goals into the net in the ninth and 16th minutes.
That wouldn't be the theme of the rest of the first half though.
LCCC was able to regain their footing on the defensive side and began to limit the shots by Salt Lake and while the offense couldn't strike, they were able to keep the game at just 2-0 going into the half.
The second half opened with another strike to the back of the net by Nao Yamada, who scored a pair in the game, in just the 47th minute.
It was another wake up for the Golden Eagles and the possessions began to get better for LCCC, as well as their attack on goal. After not having any shots on goal in the first half, LCCC was able to put four on net in the second half although none were able to make it past the Bruins keeper.
"It was a game where we had opportunities, but nobody really could find the back of the net," Arenas said. "It's stuff that I think we will sort out."
SLCC added a fourth goal in the 81st minute, and nearly added a fifth but an offsides flag went up to wipe the second away, and the game ended with LCCC falling the battle of top 20 teams 4-0.
Rebecca Sargent made her first start in net for the Golden Eagles and played well in the eyes of Arenas despite the four goals, making six saves in the match.
"Our defense actually kept us in it. Becca did a really good job even though four did go in the back of the net, I don't think any of those four were actually her fault, so it was nice to see we have a good starting keeper on our hands."
LCCC will return home on Monday for their next contest, when they face off with a pair of Arizona schools on Monday and Tuesday.
Monday's game with #18 Eastern Arizona College was moved back to 1:00 pm and they will face Cochise College on Tuesday at 11:00 am. Both matches will be held at the LCCC soccer fields, and admission is free to the public.
