Women's soccer falls to Hill College 4-0 in final game of pool play

WICHITA, KS – The Laramie County Community College women's soccer team fell in their final game of pool play at the NJCAA National Tournament to Hill College 4-0 on Monday morning, dropping to 0-2 in pool play.

"It was nice just being able to showcase in two games the reason why we were here," Head Coach Lugo Arenas said. "The scorelines didn't fall our way but our kids worked their tails off all season long to be in a position like this. I think we will be able to embrace the high moments that we had and the different scoring opportunities that we were able to produce just spoke so highly of us."

The Golden Eagles came out much stronger in their second contest of the tournament and were able to not only keep the Rebels at bay, but also put more pressure on their keeper in the first half. A near miss by LCCC in the 30th minute seemed to put Hill College on their heels, but they counterattacked and turned the action into their first goal in the 34th minute to go up 1-0.

"They gave us chances early on. We went from one end and almost scoring and had a one-on-one with the keeper who made a great save to 30 seconds later we gave up a goal. You just ride the wave of momentum and unfortunately one thing didn't go our way and it ripple effected into the end result," Arenas said.

From that point, LCCC had trouble the rest of the half getting the ball out of their defensive half and the Rebels took advantage with a second goal in the 42nd minute to double their lead going into halftime.

Hill College added another pair of goals in the second half in the 55th and 62nd minutes to double their lead.

The final 30 minutes were much different for LCCC as their offense began to find some more balance and a few more seams and a few more shots. The team managed to earn six corner kicks in the final third of the game and were able to take twice as many shots in the second half as they managed in the first.

"That spoke highly of not just our leaders but our sophomores," Arenas said proudly. "Regardless of what the scoreline was they were still eager to push everybody else on and that's why they are in the position that they were."

Unfortunately for the Golden Eagles, none of the work would pay off into a goal and they fell by a final score of 4-0.

LCCC was outshot in the game 34-8 and Kershaw finished the match with 15 saves on 19 shots on goal.  Kershaw finished the tournament with 34 saves in two games and finishes her career with 253 saves in two seasons.

"For Kiara to have such a great tournament and put her in a position to sit in a nice standing when it comes to the program's history, that's all you can ask for as a coach," Arenas said.

Whitney Hansen led the team in shots with three, including a pair on goal. Of the teams eight shots, five of them were on goal but all were saved by the Rebels goalie.

The Golden Eagles did receive the games only yellow card with Danielle O'Leary earning the booking in the 53rd minute.

LCCC finishes the season 10-5-3 after making their second consecutive and 14th overall trip to the National Tournament.
