Golden Eagles complete undefeated conference schedule with 2-1 win over WNCC

SCOTTSBLUFF, NE – The Laramie County Community College women's soccer team rallied from a halftime draw to take down Western Nebraska Community College 2-1 on Saturday afternoon, completing an undefeated conference slate with a 7-0-3 record and the third overall seed in the Region IX championships beginning this week.

"It was a little stressful, but it was nice to just pick up the win," Head Coach Lugo Arenas said. "It was nice to finish completely undefeated, just tough the rest of the results didn't go our way when we needed them to, but being able to pull through in a close game like this shows we are capable of winning those close games instead of settling for a draw."

LCCC opened the scoring early thanks to the tenth goal of the season from sophomore Caroline Kuhn on a shot from just outside the 18-yard box. It was one of nine shots by the Golden Eagles in the first half on their way to outshooting WNCC 17-7 on the day.

"(Caroline) has been in that position before and understands what it takes when you are trying to push through some situations," Arenas said. "

The Cougars didn't take many shots, but they did find their lone goal in the 34th minute when Tania Razo broke through on a one on one to beat Kiara Kershaw and even the match going into the break.

Neither team was able to do much for the first 25 minutes of the second half, but Aubrey Yantis did tack on her fourth goal of the season in the 70th minute for what proved to be the game winner on a cross by Tayler Miller.

"She's crucial," Arenas said of Miller's presence in the midfield. "She might not light it up on the scoreboard or when it comes to statistics, but with her engine and work rate, she does a really good job of being able to set the tempo and pace for what we need."

Kershaw finished the match with five saves putting her career total at 204, moving up to second all time in the LCCC record books. The LCCC goalie also moved to third all time in minutes played during the match which was her 33rd start as a Golden Eagle.

The win secured the #3 seed for the team going into the Region IX postseason and set them up with a rematch on Friday afternoon with the Cougars in Cheyenne.

"Just being able to stay at home and not having to go through travel could really just clean some stuff up for us," Arenas said. "Now we can just play this one game at a time and now we have some film on everyone to scout on and things that we did well and didn't do well."

Kickoff for the match is scheduled for 2:00 pm and more information can be found at www.golccc.com.
