Golden Eagle women claw back to earn a draw with Otero

CHEYENNE, WY – The Laramie County Community College women's soccer team survived a roller coaster match with Otero College on Friday afternoon, earning a 2-2 draw to remain undefeated in Region IX action.

The scoring opened with a LCCC goal from Aubrey Yantis who finished a shot from 25 yards out to give a 1-0 lead to the Golden Eagles in the ninth minute.

The momentum was stopped just one minute later when the Rattlers finished a corner kick with a header to even the match at one.

That would be the score entering the halftime break after the two defenses were able to settle in and slow down what had been a torrid shooting pace.

The match did become physical at that time as well, although the box score didn't necessarily show it after the game when only 15 total fouls were recorded for both teams.

On of those fouls proved to be dangerous to the Golden Eagles cause when a penalty kick was awarded to Otero in the 58th minute. The Rattlers took advantage and slipped a shot just past Kiara Kershaw in net after she got her fingertips on the attempt but a ricochet off the post saw it bounce back into the net to give Otero a 2-1 lead.

LCCC showed their resolve though and took to the attack in the final 30 minutes to put pressure on Otero and eventually broke through when Abby Williams put a shot past the keeper in the 85th minute on the second assist of the match from Macey Woolcock.

That equalizer proved to be the enough to earn the draw and LCCC was able to remain undefeated in Region IX play, moving to 5-0-3 in conference play.

LCCC actually outshot Otero in the match 12-9 but only six of them would be on net compared to seven of the nine Otero shots being on the frame.

The Golden Eagles will be back on the pitch on Saturday afternoon at 3:30 when they host Trinidad State College on sophomore day, looking to wrap up their regular season home schedule with only one loss which came in the opening match of the season.

Sophomore recognition will be held directly after the men's game at 1:00 pm and more information can be found at www.golccc.com.
