LCCC women strike early and often in 5-0 win over NJC

STERLING, CO – The Laramie County Community College women's soccer team added a fifth win to their tally and remained undefeated in Region IX action with a 5-0 win over Northeastern Junior College on Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Eagles picked up the opening goal of the match just seven minutes in with an early header from Macey Woolcock on a cross from the right side of the 18-yard box that gave them the opening lead for the first time in their last three matches and put the pressure on the Plainswomen early in the game.

A one-on-one break in the 22nd minute gave an opportunity to Caroline Kuhn to tack on another goal to her season tally and put the Golden Eagles up 2-0 as their momentum from the second half against Lamar seemed to be carrying over as just minutes later a free kick from Kjersten Bunderson made it 3-0 as she slipped one just over the crossbar for a massive first half lead.

"I think a lot of it was we recognized yesterday that the slump that we were going through couldn't carry over into today," Head Coach Lugo Arenas said about the quick start offensively. "The girls picked it up and played a completely different game and it was a full 90 minutes from everybody who stepped on the field today."

LCCC followed the first half's gameplan with a nearly identical early goal in the 48th minute to go up 4-0 as it seemed that the route was on Kuhn's second goal of the match on a header in the box for their second header of the match.

"We are a team that does really well in the air so if we can create set pieces on either corner kicks or fouls, its starting to show now what we are capable of when we find ourselves in those positions," Arenas said.

One more goal from Danielle O'Leary would finish off the match 5-0 and the Golden Eagles improved to 5-3-2 on the season after sweeping their road trip through Colorado.

The team picked up their third clean sheet in Region IX play and Kiara Kershaw registered another seven saves.

"Heading into this weekend our mentality was our defense starts with our front three and they did a really good job. Our second goal was strictly off the pressure that they created," Arenas explained. "It's great that it's not just our back four and our keeper. That is starts with everybody and that's pure effort, just putting in the work and the time."

The Golden Eagles also outshot the Plainswomen in the match 26-7 and only committed three fouls in the match and didn't earn a single card.

With the win, LCCC is now 5-3-2 on the season and 5-0-2 in Region IX action with 17 points in the standings.

The team will return home next weekend for a pair of matches with Otero College on Friday before hosting Trinidad State College on Saturday for sophomore day. Both games are scheduled to kick off at 3:30 pm. More information is available online at www.golccc.com.
