Women's Soccer picks up 4-1 win over Lamar with second half push

LAMAR, CO – The Laramie County Community College women's soccer team rallied in the second half of their match with Lamar Community College to come away with a 4-1 victory to remain undefeated in Region IX play and pick up three more points in the standings on an important road trip through Colorado on Friday afternoon.

The match was a close affair in the opening half after Lamar picked up an early goal in the third minute to put LCCC into the role of playing catchup.

"There are certain games where you don't want that to happen, but this was one of those types of situations where we needed that to wake up," Head Coach Lugo Arenas said.

The Golden Eagles went into the break with a 1-1 draw thanks to a score from Abby Williams in the 25th minute on a shot from 18 yards out to notch her first of the season.

The second half was when the team found their stride and added a go-ahead goal in the 63rd minute from Whitney Hansen on Macey Woolcock's team leading sixth assist of the season to wrestling control from the Running Lopes for a 2-1 advantage.

Playing loose, the Golden Eagles added another pair of goals from Woolcock in the 73rd and 82nd minutes, including one assisted on by goalie Kiara Kershaw, to cement the lead and take the important victory 4-1.

Arenas said there was a change in energy after the opening goal that really made the difference more than anything the coaching staff changed.

"We didn't make any adjustments tactically. From first half to second half, we kept it the same and I told the girls that was the difference maker. It wasn't anything that us as coaches did, it was all on their shoulders, and they weren't content with a 1-1 draw at the half."

Kershaw finished the match with four saves thanks to the defense only allowing eight shots from Lamar and only gave up two corner kicks to the Lopes as they controlled possession throughout the match.

The win improves the team to 4-0-2 in Region IX action and keeps them in the conversation for a bye in the first round of the postseason with 14 points in the standings.

The team will have another important game on Saturday when they face off with Northeastern Junior College on Saturday afternoon with kickoff scheduled for 3:30 pm from Sterling, Colorado. Streaming and match information can be found online at www.golccc.com.
