Women's soccer inks three to 2024 roster

CHEYENNE, WY – The Laramie County Community College women’s soccer team has picked up three new signings to their 2024 roster as the winter signing period continues.

A pair of Colorado players will be joining the roster, with Corey Allee from Rye and Brooke Matheson out of Loveland joining Brooklin Berry from Rock Springs, Wyoming on the roster.

“Heading into this fall we knew we’d have some big positions to fill with the sophomores departing, our current class has us feeling confident for how it’ll turn out,” Head Coach Lugo Arenas said. “This allows us to really focus on specific needs left and get a jump on our 2025 class.”

Allee comes to LCCC as a defender who has earned a varsity letter every year since her freshman year for the Rye High School Thunderbolts. During that time, she has helped the team to the postseason twice in 2021 and 2022.

She has totaled eight goals and 12 assists in 32 career games with Rye and had a career high of 35 steals as a junior last season after switching to the defensive side of the ball.

The success of the Golden Eagles in the past is what drew Allee to commit to playing for LCCC.

“The program from what I've gathered from Coach Arenas, as well as what I've seen online, has exceeded my expectations,” she said. “The program holds everything I've been looking for in a soccer team. The school already feels like home to me and it's not far from my family which was also a major part of my decision.”

Matheson joins the LCCC program as the second athlete in as many years from the Thompson Valley High School program, reuniting with Charlee Durtsche as a Golden Eagle.

Over the past two seasons, Matheson has played 33 games with Thompson Valley, scoring 30 goals and picking up 14 assists in that time. She has been a varsity player for her first three seasons with the Eagles and was named an all-conference as a junior.

The past three years have seen her help Thompson Valley to the postseason every year, including second-round appearances in 2022 and 2023 along with a conference championship in 2023.

“I picked LCCC because the environment and the level of competition that Coach Arenas created is something I can see myself a part of,” Matheson said.

Berry will also be joining a former teammate when she joins the Golden Eagle roster in 2024, as the Rock Springs native will be reunited with Aubrey Yantis in the fall.

As a junior, Berry was selected to the 2023 All-Conference team as well as a member of the 307 Select and Wyoming ODP Select teams. Berry is already a four-year letter winner as a member of the Rock Springs basketball team and will be joining LCCC as a midfielder.

As a freshman, she was a part of the 4A Girls State Championship Team and helped the team to a runner up finish in 2022.

“I picked LCCC to continue my education and soccer career because it felt like home away from home,” Berry said. “My family has history with the school and the team and I’m eager to join the bird gang!”

Arenas said the trio of new signings shows a good balance of the new players he is bringing to Cheyenne.

“Brooke, Brooklin and Corey all help improve areas on the field for us next fall,” Arenas said. “Brooke is natural goal scorer and brings a lot of excitement up front for us. Brooklin’s vision and technical ability will help expand our midfield depth and her chemistry with Aubrey Yantis from high school should carry over to LCCC. Corey is an elusive player with great pace and speed, she’ll have the ability to contribute right away next fall.”

The Golden Eagles will also be returning Jayda Kenison who was originally going to play for LCCC in the 2023 campaign with her sister Cambria. The Mountain View High School graduate spent her fall semester as a student at the University of Wyoming but decided to return to the soccer pitch this spring to play with her sister.

Arenas said he also has multiple walk-ons looking to join the team in the fall and is hoping to sign six to seven more athletes before the fall 2024 season begins.
