Women’s Basketball Drops 85-70 Decision to Otero

LA JUNTA, CO – Three Golden Eagles scored 10 points, but Laramie County Community College women's basketball fell to Otero Junior College, 85-70, on Tuesday night in La Junta, Colorado.

The Golden Eagles (8-4) trailed the Rattlers (10-3) 40-34 at the half. Otero used a big first quarter to jump out on the Golden Eagles outscoring them 30-16 in the quarter. LCCC stormed back in the second quarter and outscored the Rattlers 18-10 in the quarter. The third quarter was tight as both teams scored 17 points in the quarter. Otero used another big quarter to pull away in the fourth.

Sam Hester (Saratoga Springs, Utah) came off the bench and scored in double figures for the sixth time this season, netting her 10 points on 3-of-8 shooting.

Sophomore guard Haylie Anderson (Clearfield, Utah) posted 10 points and two steals, while making 3-for-9 from the field. Sophomore Ja'Kia Wells (Mesquite, Texas) notched 10 points and eight rebounds. Freshman guard Karly Mathern (Windsor, Colorado) chipped in nine points, all on three-pointers. Freshman post Abby Garreaud (Magna, Utah) tacked on eight points and two rebounds and guard Saraven Allen (St. George, Utah) added seven points and two steals.

For Otero, Leah Mafua scored a game-high 38 points, while making 11-of-12 free throws. She also pulled down 10 rebounds. Emma Florez-Pascual totaled a double-double as well on 21 points and 13 rebounds alongside three blocks.

For the game, the Rattlers hit 7-of-24 triples (29.2 percent) while Laramie County shot 11-of-28 (39.3 percent) from 3-point distance. For the Golden Eagles, 10 different student-athletes scored, and 10 different players grabbed rebounds.
