Women’s Basketball Falls 79-67 to Trinidad State

TRINIDAD, CO – A dominating fourth quarter helped carry the Trinidad State Junior College women's basketball team to victory on Saturday as the Trojans topped Laramie County Community College, 79-67.

LCCC is now 2-2 in the Region IX South, 10-9 overall, while the Trojans rise to 9-7 overall and 3-2 in Region IX South.

Two of LCCC's starters came away with double-figure performances, starting with 26 points from freshman Sarah Kruthaupt (Las Vegas, Nevada). Freshman Skylar Backstrom (Castle Rock, Colorado) followed with 12 points.

Sophomore Caylin Arnold (Strasburg, Colorado) led the team on the boards with nine rebounds, while Kruthaupt led the team with four assists and two steals.

The Trojans were led by a 38-point effort from Mandie Perea. Hannah Gilmore had 11 points and Annette Warner added 10 points. Warner also pulled down 13 rebounds for the double-double.

TSJC took control of the game from the start as they took a 23-13 lead after the first quarter. The matchup evened out during the second quarter as Laramie County improved their shooting from the field and held the TSJC. The Golden Eagles maintained a solid run and cut the lead at the half down to two at 41-39.

Both teams got after it in the third quarter but it was the Trojans who led by three after three. TSJC bumped that lead up in the fourth quarter and outscored the Golden Eagles 20-11 in the quarter for the 79-67 win. The Golden Eagles shot 35.5 percent from the field, 41.4 percent from the 3-point line and 73.3 percent from the foul line.

The Golden Eagles will return home on Friday for a 5 p.m. tipoff against Otero Junior College.
