LA JUNTA, CO – It was a strong and balanced bounce back win for #12 Laramie County Community College men's soccer as they routed the Trinidad State College Trojans on Saturday to move to 8-2 on the season and 5-1 in Region IX action with an 8-0 victory.
The match was highlighted by a two goal, one assist match from Tristan Villanueva who finished the weekend with three total goals and seven total points.
His goals were just the icing on the cake of a romp through the Trojans that began in just the sixth minute when Cooper Johnson found his fourth goal of the season on a Vincent Renton cross to put LCCC up 1-0.
Another goal followed from Gilberto Vargas for his first of the season after Roy Mendoza-Huerta put a free kick into the attacking area in the 14th minute.
Villanueva then added an assist after he led Darrien Gates II into a one-on-one with the goalie that he finished in the 24th minute to make it 3-0. LCCC added one more in the opening half on a Josh Rodriguez-Garcia shot from 20 yards out.
With a big halftime lead, LCCC could have pulled back and played easy in the second half, but coming off of a loss, the Golden Eagles were out to prove something and took another 20 shots in the second half.
They were rewarded with the second goal of the game from Gates II when Angel Avila-Sandoval put him into a second one-on-one with the goalie and the Kansas City, Kansas native finished to make it 5-0 in the 63rd minute.
LCCC ran into back-to-back goals in the 70th minute when Villanueva took his turn in the spotlight. He took another assist from Avila-Sandoval and just second later used his own skills to set up a shot from 18 yards out to make it 7-0 in the blink of an eye.
One more goal would finish off the avalanche of scoring when Mendoza-Huerta took a late penalty kick in the 83rd minute to close the scoring and hand the Golden Eagles an 8-0 win to close out the short road trip.
The LCCC defense was stellar all game long, only allowing six total shots in the match and using their physicality to push the Trojans off of the ball. The Golden Eagles also led the match in corner kicks and finished with less yellow cards as well.
The schedule will bring the Golden Eagles back to Cheyenne this weekend when the take on Western Nebraska Community College on Saturday afternoon at 1:00 pm for sophomore day. More information on sophomore day can be found at www.golccc.com.
