Golden Eagle men earn 3-0 win over Gillette College for second Region IX victory

CHEYENNE, WY – The Laramie County Community College men's soccer team made a 1-0 halftime lead stick as they picked up their second win of the season against Gillette College on Friday afternoon, finishing the Pronghorns off 3-0 to move to 2-1 in Region IX play.

The Golden Eagles picked up an opening goal in the first half from Azael Marrufo in the 38th minute when a ball popped up off of the Pronghorn goalie and was finished for a 1-0 lead that LCCC took into the half.

In the second half, Marrufo doubled the score in favor of LCCC with a second goal in the 72nd minute which was followed shortly after by a third strike from Owen Sanchez in the 77th minute to put the final nail in the coffin of the eventual 3-0 win.

Marrufo now leads the team in goals with three on the season and has eight points overall and Head Coach Fernando Perez said his consistency is a great benefit for the team.

"He does his job, and he knows what his job is. Whether he starts or comes off of the bench he produces and that's what we want from our strikers is to produce and if they come off of the bench to maintain that energy and production of scoring goals."

Sanchez also finished with an assist on the opening goal and was joined on a rare assist from the goalie when Adan Herrera fed the ball to Marrufo for his second score.

Herrera was strong in net for Laramie County Community College, earning his first clean sheet in his career making three saves to complete the first shutout of the season for the Golden Eagles.

"That was crucial," Perez said. "They worked hard during preseason and it's finally showing that the hard work is paying off for all of the defenders and the team and it means a lot."

It was a physical game as was evident by nine yellow cards being handed out including six to LCCC players, most of which came in the final 20 minutes of the match.

The win gives momentum to the Golden Eagles going into Saturday's match with Casper College in a match that could vault LCCC into the top four of the Region IX standings.

"We can take all of the great things that we did today and prime for tomorrow and just be ready at three o'clock for kickoff," Perez said.

Match time is scheduled for 3:30 pm from Casper, Wyoming. Streaming information can be found at www.golccc.com.
