Golden Eagles use hot start to drop Rocky Mountain JV 96-74

GILLETTE, WY – The Laramie County Community College men's basketball team completed their perfect weekend with a 96-74 win over Rocky Mountain College's JV team to wrap up their stay at the Pronghorn Winter Classic on Saturday afternoon.

"For the first time we came out and played well in the first half," Head Coach DeWayne Saulsberry said. "In the second half, when it's really hard to keep that intensity, we let them score a few more points than we wanted them to, but it's really hard to keep that intensity going when there is no fear of losing."

The Golden Eagles got off to a quick start thanks to their outside shooting and some quick transition play and after four minute they led the Bears 14-4 going into the first media timeout.

LCCC steadily grew the advantage with a diet of driving inside and midrange shots and had the lead to 19 with 3:37 to go, led by a strong showing from Phoenix Bullock to lead the way.

At the buzzer, LCCC had a 44-23 advantage.

The second half saw the two sides trade runs, with Rocky Mountain able to draw as close as 14 and the Golden Eagles able to pull ahead by as much as 24.

LCCC spread the ball around and every player was able to log at least five minutes in the game on the way to a 96-74 win to close out the weekend and improve the LCCC record to 3-5 on the season.

The team was paced by an impressive game from Bullock who finished two assists shy of a triple-double with 21 points, 11 rebounds, and eight assists.

"Phoenix is an all-around player," Saulsberry said. "I thought Phoenix and Davion played unbelievable this weekend. It was good to see those guys have some fun, smile, and laugh."

Davion Butler added 21 points, and two other Golden Eagles broke double digits with 12 from TJ Coulter and 10 from Kevin Sylla. Brevin Phillips also had an impressive game with nine points and nine rebounds.

As a team, the Golden Eagles shot nearly 53 percent from the field and 36 percent from three. They also dominated the rebounding battle 45-32 and only allowed eight offensive rebounds to Rocky Mountain.

The Golden Eagles will have the weekend to get ready for a tough weekend of games at home for the Thanksgiving Classic. LCCC will begin the tournament with a Friday game against the defending Region IX Champion Trinidad State College before taking on Northeastern Junior College on Saturday.

Both games are scheduled for 5:00 pm at the Blue FCU RAC. Tickets and more information can be found at www.golccc.com.
