Late surge by McCook gives Indians 99-84 win over LCCC men

CHEYENNE, WY – The Laramie County Community College men's basketball team rallied to take a late lead against McCook Community College on Saturday afternoon, but dropped their second game of the week to the Indians, 99-84 to close out their five-game homestand.

The opening half saw the Indians pull away on a 9-4 run to gain the opening advantage, and much of it came from feeding Bryan Akanmu in the post where his 14 point first half helped to build the lead up to 18-10.

LCCC responded with Brandon Tchouya taking charge and answering back with a 12-3 run of their own to go up 27-24 with just over eight minutes remaining.

Both sides settled into a back and forth for the next few minutes until the Indians rallied for a 13-2 run to close out the half, going into the locker room up 49-38 thanks to shooting 6-17 from deep in the opening period and 53 percent from the field.

The second half opened with LCCC trimming the gap to a one possession game and eventually taking the lead with 13 minutes remaining in the game. The Indians and Golden Eagles traded the lead five times over the next four minutes into a McCook timeout with 8:44 remaining and the Indians up 73-71.

A Jordan Reed three and an Ejay Scroggins alley oop, both assisted by Davion Butler pushed LCCC back up 76-73 but that would be the last time the Golden Eagles would hold the lead.

McCook closed the game with a 26-8 run paced by multiple threes from Louie Tucker who finished the game with nine from deep to lead the Indians in scoring with 27 points.

The Golden Eagles fell 99-84 and dropped to 6-4 on the season after the loss.

Four players finished in double figures for LCCC, led by 20 from Jordan Reed who also led the team in steals with four.

Scroggins finished with a 16-point, 12-rebound double-double and Tchouya and Pedro Ellery finished with 18 and 15 points respectively in the loss.

The biggest issue for LCCC came in shooting percentage where McCook out shot the Golden Eagles by going 56.9 percent from the field to 48.6 percent for LCCC. It was also a tough night from the line for the men, only making 9 of 21 free throw attempts.

LCCC is in the midst of a stretch of six games in nine days and doesn't have much time to contemplate the loss, as they travel to Western Nebraska Community College on Monday evening for their second battle of the year with the Cougars.

Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 pm from Scottsbluff, and more information can be found at www.golccc.com.
