LCCC bounces back from Saturday's loss with dominant effort over WNCC

SCOTTSBLUFF, NE – The Laramie County Community College men's basketball team cruised to a 84-68 win on Monday night at the Cougar Palace to defeat Western Nebraska Community College for the second time this year, moving to 7-4 in the process.

"Our guys took that loss against McCook personal, and I like the way that they came out. They came out focused and kind of took it out on Western Nebraska," Head Coach DeWayne Saulsberry said.

The opening salvo from the Golden Eagles was a sign of things to come in the first half when they jumped out to an 8-1 lead in the first four minutes. The defense for WNCC would slow down the offense for LCCC with a run of their own to cut it to 11-10 but that would be the closest the Cougars would get in the first half.

LCCC proceeded to slowly grow the lead, hitting double digits when a three from Davion Butler pushed them up 29-18 and eventually grew the lead to a high of 18 when they went up 38-20. A small burst from WNCC closed it to a 38-24 game going into the half.

The half was one of the best on defense the Golden Eagles had played all year and Saulsberry said it was a matter of focusing on detail.

"Western Nebraska missed some shots, but I think we just paid attention to detail which we didn't the other night."

Six minutes into the second half the Golden Eagles had not only reclaimed their 18-point lead but had pushed it to 20 after a 16-10 run out of the half had them up 54-34 with 13:50 remaining at the first media timeout.

That 20 point lead would stay in place the remainder of the game despite small pushes from the Cougars to chip into the lead. Every bucket from WNCC would find an answer from the Golden Eagles, and outside of a burst of three's with two minutes to go, the defense for LCCC was able to hold the line.

"I told the guys that's what we have to do if we want to be a good basketball team. You have to put it together and finish a whole basketball game and we did tonight. We finished a whole basketball game," Saulsberry said.

LCCC's offense was led by Kamrohn Roundtree who got his first start of the season and rewarded it with 26 points and 15 rebounds. Butler added 20 more while going 4-7 from three and Brandon Tchouya was the only other Golden Eagle to hit double figures with 10.

Both sides struggled from the field in the game and the Golden Eagles got the better there too, shooting 41 percent from the field while their defense held WNCC to only 31 percent and just 22 percent from three. LCCC was outrebounded in the game 63-43, particularly on the offensive glass where the Cougars picked up 29 rebounds.

The Golden Eagles are back at in on Tuesday night when they travel to Air Force Prep in Colorado Springs for a battle with the Huskies. It will be the fourth game in five days for LCCC and Saulsberry said they need to be ready for a fight with a smart basketball team.

"Hopefully we come out mentally ready because that's a team that really wears on you. It's just a smart basketball team so we have to come out and match their basketball IQ tomorrow."

Opening tip is set for 7:00 pm from the Air Force Academy. More information can be found at www.golccc.com.
