Golden Eagles drop defending Region IX Champs 87-85 to open Thanksgiving Classic

CHEYENNE, WY – The Laramie County Community College men's basketball team used a big first half offensively to take down the defending Region IX Champion Trinidad State Trojans 87-85 on Friday night at Storey Gymnasium to move to 2-0 at home on the young season.

The first half was a back-and-forth game early until the Golden Eagles began to assert themselves over TSC with a 9-0 run with 13 minutes to go in the half that gave them a 23-16 lead. The Trojans seemed to right the ship, but just a few minutes later LCCC added a 13-4 run to pad their lead even more, going up 36-20 with 5:09 remaining in the half and closing it out up 50-36.

In the second half the Trojans rallied and early on were able to bring it back to a single digit game in the opening minutes as the LCCC offense dried through the first ten minutes.

Trinidad took their first lead of the second half with six minutes remaining, but LCCC didn't let them control the scoreboard for long, reclaiming the lead and pushing it to a five point edge.

That is how the game would close out with both teams trading baskets until the final horn when a late three from Trinidad State trimmed the gap, although it didn't change the eventual outcome of an 87-85 Golden Eagle victory.

LCCC was paced by Jordan Reed in the game who's 31 points was a career high. He was joined by Brandon Tchouya in double figures with 22 and the pair were the only Golden Eagles to crack double digits.

Tchouya also finished with three steals, three blocks, three assists, and four rebounds.

As a team, LCCC shot 45 percent from the field and 26 percent from deep, although that number was hurt by going just 2-13 from three-point range in the second half.

The Golden Eagles did improve on their free throws after a 6-18 night in Lamar in their last game, the team went 14-21 against Trinidad State.

It's a quick turnaround for the Golden Eagle men as they continue play at the Thanksgiving Classic on Saturday afternoon against Lamar Community College look to avenge a 78-77 loss to the Running Lopes on the road.
