Race to 100 sees LCCC men drop first game of the season to Trinidad State 116-100

TRINIDAD, CO – The Laramie County Community College men's basketball team couldn't extinguish a hot shooting Trinidad State Trojans team on Tuesday night and dropped their first game of the season 116-100 in a shootout on the road.

The opening minutes did not see much go right for LCCC and Trinidad took an 8-0 lead behind a pair of threes to force an early timeout.

The break gave the Golden Eagles a chance to rally, and they quickly responded to tie the game at 17. Trinidad State wouldn't give up the lead though and remained in front until in the final five minutes the Golden Eagles took their first lead 38-37.

The two teams traded leads for the rest of the half with neither getting more than four points away and the high scoring half ended with the Golden Eagles leading 52-50.

After establishing a 58-53 lead out of the break, LCCC fell victim to a 13-2 run giving the Trojans the lead after a few Golden Eagle miscues. The lead continued to grow steadily until a dunk by Trinidad State with nine minutes remaining gave them a ten-point lead, 84-74 and the Golden Eagles called a timeout.

The physical yet high scoring half continued and with just over one minute remaining both teams eclipsed 100 points when LCCC cut the Trinidad lead which had grown to as much as 16 to 112-101.

The final score finished with the Trojans earning the win 116-100.

The Golden Eagles had a pair break 20 points in the game. Sophomores Brandon Tchouya and Jordan Reed scored 25 and 22 points respectively. Phoenix Bullock finished with 19 and both Pedro Ellery and Davion Butler had 11.

The game was a physical one with both teams combining to take 80 free throws. LCCC finished the night taking advantage of theirs to shoot 35-44 from the stripe.

LCCC shot 42.4 percent from the field as a team and just shy of 30 percent from three but were only 2 of 14 from deep in the second half.

The Trojans answered by shooting and astonishing 59.7 percent from the field and 10-20 from three-point range.

There isn't much time for the Golden Eagles to rebound. The team heads back to Cheyenne for a Wednesday night battle with Western Nebraska in the home opener at Storey Gym.
