LCCC men make statement on defense in 87-56 win over McCook

McCOOK, NE – The Laramie County Community College men's basketball team didn't wait around to send a message on Saturday afternoon against McCook Community College, dispatching the Indians 87-56 to improve their record to 2-0 on the young season.

The Golden Eagles were cooking early and often in the first half to jump out to a 13-3 lead in the first eight minutes of the game. A late surge at the end of the half increased the lead to 41-23 at the half.

"What we wanted to do was just shut them down," Head Coach DeWayne Saulsberry said. "We are trying to take pride in our defense, to say this is the backbone of our team. They came out and put their foot down and shut some of their guys down that have been having big nights."

In the second half, the lead continued to balloon thanks to continued strong work on the defensive end and more hot shooting from a team that finished the game at 49.3 percent from the field despite only going 5-18 from beyond the arc in the game.

"You don't want to hang your hat on the three-pointer when you are on the road and the guys can do it different ways," Saulsberry added.

LCCC finished off the second half 46-33 to win the game going away 87-56.

Brandon Tchouya continued to show his talents with a 21-point outing to lead all scorers on the day. Kamrohn Roundtree added another 19 points to go with 11 rebounds for his first double double as a Golden Eagle.

"Kam brought energy, and any time you play with joy and energy, and you have his athletic ability you are going to be able to do something," Saulsberry said of his transfer from Grayson College. "He wanted the challenge of their big guy being recruited by everyone in the country and tonight he won that challenge."

Jordan Reed and Davion Butler both finished with 14 each to round out the Golden Eagles in double digits and nine of the eleven players on the team to get on the court scored.

On the defensive side LCCC finished with 12 steals as team led by Tchouya and Butler with three each. The Golden Eagles also outrebounded the Indians 45-33 including 11-9 on the offensive glass.

The LCCC men continue a tough stretch of games to open the season when they head to Trinidad State College on Tuesday night for a 6:00 pm tipoff against the defending Region IX Champions.

They will wrap up a stretch of four games in six days when they face Western Nebraska Community College in the home opener at Storey Gym on Wednesday night at 7:00 pm.
