LCCC men fall late to Northwest 80-73

POWELL, WY – The Laramie County Community College men's basketball team fell on the road at Northwest 80-73 on Wednesday night in a tight back-and-forth affair with the Trappers to fall to 11-8 on the season.

"I thought it was a great battle," Head Coach DeWayne Saulsberry said. "They just made play's down the end to win the basketball game."

After a nip and tuck first half of action that left the Golden Eagles down 38-34 at the half, LCCC responded with a 6-0 run to open the second half and put the half back into square terms at the start.

Both defenses ruled the opening ten minutes after that run and the two sides couldn't escape a one position game with the score squared at 51 all at the media timeout.

Laramie County stayed right with the Trappers into the final few minutes when Northwest sparked an 8-2 run to pick up a 67-62 lead after a contested three dropped from the top of the key.

The game would move to free throws and the Trappers finished their opportunities at the line and handed the Golden Eagles their first conference loss 80-73.

Xavier McCord led the team with 21 points and was two rebounds shy of another double-double. Tristan Starks (13) and Brandon Tchouya (15) joined McCord in double figures.

It was a tough night from deep for LCCC and the team only shot 18.5 percent from deep on the night compared to 31 percent by Northwest.

"We're a team that makes six to seven three's a game and we just didn't," Saulsberry said.

The Trappers also won the battle for rebounds 38-34.

Laramie County will be back home for a week of home games beginning on Saturday when they host Eastern Wyoming at Storey Gymnasium at 4:00 pm.

"It will be good to get some home cooking," Saulsberry said. "It'll be nice to have these guys sleep in their own beds and come out and be ready to play."

The game will be a part of Pink Out and tickets can be purchased at www.golccc.com.
