Golden Eagles Suffer Road Defeat at Northeastern

STERLING, CO – The LCCC Golden Eagles (1-2, 0-0) saw Northeastern (1-2, 0-0) pull away in the second half and suffered their first defeat of the season, losing 93-74 on Tuesday night at the Bank of Colorado Event Center.  

NJC opened the game on a 9-4 run in the first two minutes before the Golden Eagles got their footing in their first road game of the season. Ghared Boyce (Brockton, Mass.) ended the run with a three from deep. Boyce finished the game with a team-high 21 points, his third straight game of 20-plus points to open the season.

The Plainsmen proceeded to go on an 11-0 run to open up a 22-7 lead. The Golden Eagles then rattled off a 22-6 run to take a 29-28 lead after a pair of Erik Oliver (Cheyenne, Wyo.) free throws. Oliver finished the evening with 14 points.

After the Plainsmen took the lead back at 35-33, Boyce canned a transition three to snatch the lead back at 36-33 as both teams traded baskets late in the half.

Northeastern took the lead back right before the break as the Golden Eagles went into the locker room trailing 41-39.

Arion Lewis (Philadelphia, Pa.) scored 15 points, tying his season-high set against North Platte.

After teams traded baskets to open the second half, Northeastern once again put together a run, scoring 10 straight points to open up a 61-50 lead before Marko Maletic (London, Ontario) hit a corner three to stop the run, one of two threes made by Maletic. The Maletic three sparked a 12-2 run capped off by a Boyce layup on the break, pulling the Golden Eagles within a basket at 65-63.

Northeastern pulled away, finishing the game with a 28-11 run as the Golden Eagles fell to the Plainsmen 93-74.

 LCCC continues the two-game road stretch on Saturday, heading to La Junta, Colo to take on Otero at 4:00 pm.
