Golden Eagles Split on First Day of Region IX Tournament

STERLING, Colo. – Laramie County Community College swept Lamar Community College Wednesday morning to open the Region IX Volleyball Tournament in Sterling, Colorado.

With the win, Laramie County will now play Northeastern Junior College at 1 p.m. on Wednesday in the Winners Bracket. LCCC improves to 11-22 overall.

LCCC won the sets 25-11, 25-15, 25-16.

Laramie County hit really well for the match and had a higher attack percentage than Lamar in all three sets. Cameron Callahan (Parker, Colorado) led the Golden Eagles with 12 kills while Cassidy Nelson (South Jordan, Utah) had 10. Gwen Sheldon (Loveland, Colorado) put up 33 assists.

The Golden Eagles also had the advantage in blocks and aces.

Second match of the day was against #16 Northeastern Junior College. LCCC fell in five sets (27-25, 25-18, 18-25, 19-25, 8-15).

Trailing 10-5 in the first set, the Golden Eagles came back and outscored Northeastern 6-1 to force a timeout; LCCC and NJC would be tight all the way to the end where LCCC eventually went on to win 27-25.

Trailing by five in set two, LCCC went ahead for good with a 7-0 run, behind a couple of aces and kills. NJC made it close, cutting the lead down to three late, but the Golden Eagles finished the set strong with a 25-18 win.

Set three was all Northeastern early on, jumping out to another 10-5 lead. The Golden Eagles stormed back to level up the match but NJC would pull away late. NJC would take set four and five to come back for the win.

Up next, Laramie County will compete in the contenders bracket tomorrow at 12 p.m.
