Nelson’s Has Season-High 27 Kills In Match, but Golden Eagles Fall to Cougars

SCOTTSBLUFF, Nebraska – The Golden Eagles were on the road Tuesday night and fell to Western Nebraska Community College.

The Laramie County Community College volleyball team just couldn't finish off the feisty Cougars late in sets as Western Nebraska scored a 23-25, 25-17, 30-28, 25-20 win at the Cougar Palace.

A pair of Cassidy Nelson (South Jordan, Utah) kills and another by Kyla Childers (Parker, Colorado) helped push Laramie County (4-20) in front in the opening set. The Cougars (20-5) picked up some momentum with a late charge but the Golden Eagles would not let the set slip away.

LCCC found itself playing catch-up most of the second set, but a few blocks in the set helped them back into the set. Western Nebraska never let the Golden Eagles grab the lead from then on.

The Golden Eagles rallied in the third set early on after trailing by four points. After a Nelson kill, the Golden Eagles stole the momentum. LCCC would lead by two late in the set but WNCC would level it at 24-24. The match would go back n forth but WNCC would come out with the late set win. Western Nebraska would take the fourth set 25-20 for the win.

For the Golden Eagles, Nelson led the way with a season-high 27 kills and six digs. Her 27 kills marks the most by a Golden Eagle in LCCC history. Childers added nine kills and Kalme Moncavo (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) added eight.

Gwen Sheldon (Loveland, Colorado) had a career-high 52 assists and three aces. Her 52 assists are the second most in LCCC history. Kendzee Cloward (South Jordan, Utah) made 20 digs for the Golden Eagles.

LCCC will look to bounce back as they host Sheridan College on Friday at 7 p.m. in a Region IX North battle.
