Nelson and Martin Power Golden Eagles to Region IX District C Champs

CHEYENNE, Wyo. – Avery Nelson (Colorado Springs, Colorado) and Kylie Martin (Gypsum, Colorado) posted 13 kills to power 18th ranked Laramie County Community College to a 3-1 win over Western Nebraska (25-15, 18-25, 25-14, 26-24) Saturday in Cheyenne for the Region IX District C Championship.

The Golden Eagles 29-8 overall finished with 49 kills and a .272 hitting percentage. Payton Stack (Casper, Wyoming) posted eight kills and four blocks. Kyle Meltzer (Fort Collins, Colorado) collected a team-high 22 digs. Kasandra Sturges (Parker, Colorado) and Gwen Sheldon (Loveland, Colorado) combined for 42 assists.

The Golden Eagles got to the championship match by defeating Western Wyoming Community College earlier in the day in four set (25-21, 26-24, 25-13, 25-14). Elizabeth Clark (Sandy, Utah) recorded 18 kills in the match. LCCC had a .323 hitting percentage. Sturges and Sheldon combined for 51 assists. Meltzer picked up 15 digs.

The Golden Eagles held the Mustangs to .149 hitting percentage and WNCC Cougars to .176 hitting percentage.

LCCC are Region IX District C Champions and have qualified for the NJCAA National Tournament in Hutchinson, Kansas. This is the second year in a row that LCCC will be at the National Tournament.
