LCCC Volleyball Wins 3-2 Decision Over #18 Western Nebraska

CHEYENNE, Wyo. – The Laramie County Community College volleyball team picked up a 3-2 (25-13, 25-20, 17-25, 17-25, 16-14) decision over #18 Western Nebraska Community College, Tuesday evening, in Cheyenne, Wyo.

Laramie County improves to 23-7 overall on the season and split the regular season series with Western Nebraska. The Cougars fell to 23-8 overall on the year.

Sophomore Avery Nelson (Colorado Springs, Colo.) paced the Golden Eagles' offense with 18 kills. Sophomore Kylie Martin (Gypsum, Colo.) recorded 12 kills on the night, while freshman Jazzy Espinoza (Cheyenne, Wyo.) added seven kills. Sophomore setter Kasandra Sturges (Parker, Colo.) dished out 33 set assists.

On the defensive side of the ball, sophomore Kyle Meltzer (Fort Collins, Colo.) and freshman Alessia Venturelli (Modena, Italy) led with 13 digs, while Espinoza recorded a team-high on the night with seven blocks.

The first set was all LCCC as they capitalized on WNCC errors throughout the first set. Laramie County had a six-point lead midway through the set and pushed that into double figures and sealed a first set win of 25-13.

The second set sat at 16-11 in favor of the Golden Eagles when back to back kills by Nelson gave the Golden Eagles a larger lead. The lead would get cut down to four as the Cougars answered with a little run. A run by LCCC gave the Golden Eagles a 25-20 second set win.

Set three began with the exchange of runs by each team. The Cougars took an early 10-8 lead and would not surrender the lead despite several short runs by LCCC. The Cougars went on to take the set 25-17. Much like the third set, the fourth set was a quick start by WNCC and took a 15-10 lead midway through the set. The Golden Eagles got within four but a late run by WNCC sealed the fourth set.

The fifth set was tied on a couple of occasions throughout the set. Neither team led by more than two points for the set. Laramie County held a 15-14 edge when an error by WNCC sealed the win for the Golden Eagles.

The Golden Eagles will stay at home and take on Northwest College, Friday, Oct. 23, at 7 p.m. The contest is LCCC Volleyball Dig Pink Match & Fundraiser that will have a silent auction with all proceeds going to benefit the Wyoming Breast Cancer Initiative.
