Golden Eagles Take Down Matadors in First Game at National Tournament

FOLEY, AL – The Laramie County Community College picked the most opportune time to click its attack. The Golden Eagles scored three goals to beat Arizona Western College 3-1 in first game of Pool D of the National Tournament in Pool D.

The Golden Eagles, the #9 seed of the tournament will face #5 seed Eastern Florida State College at 4:30 p.m. (MT) at Foley Sports Complex in Foley, Alabama on Tuesday. The Titans defeated the Golden Eagles 6-1 back in the beginning of the season.

Laramie County took the early lead, Taylor Stoeger (Green River, Wyoming) scored on pass from Annie Rolf (West Sussex, England) that got past the outstretched keeper in the 7th minute.

LCCC continued to build momentum with their attack and had two goals called back due to an offside call. Stoeger played a ball through to Darby Whiteley (Bungendor NSW, Australia) on the right side who put her shot low in the left corner to double the lead. It was Whiteley first goal of the season and 10th assist for Stoeger.

The Matadors would get a goal right before the half to cut the lead in half. The Golden Eagles came out as the more aggressive team at half and it paid off. Alexis Hobbs (Kent, England) lifted a cross on a free kick and Katie Loken (Cheyenne, Wyoming) headed it down to Stoeger who tapped it in the net in the 78th minute.

The Matadors tried to press as the match moved on but Ellie Bowman (Essex, England) and the LCCC defense stood their ground. Bowman finished with two saves, one in each half.
