STERLING – Four Laramie County Community College women's basketball players scored in double figures but it wasn't enough as they suffered their second consecutive lost in Region IX South play on Wednesday. The Golden Eagles fell to Northeastern Junior College 85-71 on the road.
Laramie County sits in a tie for third right now in the conference at 5-4 and holds a 14-11 overall record. The Plainswomen improve to 5-4 in Region IX South and 10-10 overall.
Karli O'Brien (Rapid City, South Dakota) was the top scorer for the second consecutive game, with a team-high 15 point performance. O'Brien was 3-for-5 (.857) shooting from the foul line. She went 6-for-9 overall from the floor and added three rebounds and two steals.
Three other Golden Eagles landed in double-figures as freshman Sarah Kruthaupt (Las Vegas, Nevada) had 14 points. She shot 3-for-8 from the floor and 6-for-7 from the line while pulling down three rebounds. Skylar Backstrom (Castle Rock, Colorado) added 12 points. She hit all of her field goals from the 3-point line and was 3-for-4 from the line while pulling down four rebounds. Freshman Courtney Walker was the other player to land in double-figures with 10 points. She knocked down two 3-pointers in the contest and led the team in steals with three.
Sophomore Caylin Arnold (Strasburg, Colorado) led the team with five rebounds.
The Golden Eagles shot 51.1 percent from the floor, 46.7 percent from the perimeter and 76.2 percent from the free throw line.
Katie Diakhaby led the Plainswomen with 26 points, shooting 12-for-16 from the floor and 2-for-3 from the line. She completed the double-double by also pulling down 14 rebounds. Darci Finnigan added 16 points and a game-high seven assists. Kiara McElroy chipped added 15 points.
Northeastern shot 51.6 percent from the field, 40.7 percent from three-point range, and 90.9 percent from the charity stripe.
The Golden Eagles will be at home for a three-game stretch, first hosting Eastern Wyoming College on Wednesday, Feb. 7, at 5 p.m. Tickets for this and all LCCC home basketball games are $5 adults, $3 for students, #2 seniors and military and free for LCCC students, staff and faculty with valid ID.
