Women’s Basketball Starts Gillette Classic with Win

GILLETTE – The Laramie County Community College women's basketball took the first match of the Gillette College Classic Friday afternoon by defeating Colorado Northwestern Community College 92-54.

LCCC is 4-3 on the season, registering its second win over CNCC. The Golden Eagles defeated the Spartans a week ago in Price, Utah.

Four Golden Eagles led the team's scoring efforts with double-figure tallies, starting with sophomores Madison Hamm (Fort Collins, Colorado) and Caylin Arnold (Strasburg, Colorado) 14 points. Katelyn Smith (Loveland, Colorado) and freshman Skylar Backstrom (Castle Rock, Colorado) followed with 12 points apiece.

Arnold completed the double-double and led the team by pulling down 11 rebounds, while Gabby Wilson (Kremmling, Colorado), Jessica Stoner (Centennial, Colorado) and Courtney Walker (Las Vegas, Nevada) distributed a team-high three assists.

LCCC shot 53.1 percent from the field while holding Colorado Northwestern to 26.7 percent, and brought down 60 rebounds to the Spartans' 31.

The Golden Eagles were on fire in the first quarter as they put up a season high 41 points. 20 second quarter points sent the Golden Eagles with 61-28 advantage at the half.

Colorado Northwestern Alyssa Nielsen led the team across the board with 13 points, six rebounds and a block. Analiza Elizondo was the other Spartan to score in double figures with 10.
