Laramie County Record Win to Begin Region IX Play

Cheyenne – The Golden Eagles men's soccer team snapped a three-game losing streak, with all three of those losses to top-15 teams in the country after it defeated Sheridan College 2-1 in the their Region IX opener Friday.

LCCC (3-3) controlled the tempo from the initial whistle, outshooting the Generals (0-2-1) 24-8. The Golden Eagles had the edge in shots on goal 12-4.

After coming up empty in several early opportunities, the hosts finally broke through in the 32nd minute when Omar Castruita (Boulder, Colorado) slipped in a shot off a pass from Nathan Stitt (Torrington, Wyoming).

Unfortunately, the match would be leveled back up in the 35th minute when Garrett Cole scored on a free kick. The match would go into the half at 1-1.

The Golden Eagles would break the tie in the 67th minute when Castruita sent a ball to Jonathan Jimenez-Flores (Longmont, Colorado) who knocked into the net. LCCC posted 10 corner kicks in the latter half (13 overall), but could not add to its advantage.

Nine separate Golden Eagles recorded multiple shot attempts with Castruita and Noe Ortiz-Pena (Aurora, Colorado) topping the crew with five tries, with both of them putting three of their five attempts on goal. Declan Domyan (Sandton, South Africa) managed three saves in the victory.

Laramie County is at home against Saturday to host Gillette College in Region IX action at 1:30 p.m.
