Men’s Soccer Tops Garden City in Opener

CHEYENNE, Wyo. – Laramie County Community College men's soccer freshman Sawyer Cirbo (Thornton, Colorado) netted a pair of goals in the Golden Eagles 2-1 victory over Garden City Community College on Sunday evening at home.

The Golden Eagles picked up their first season-opening win since 2016 and starts the year 1-0.

"Great team effort today" head coach Vince Gibson said. "We showed some tremendous grit by our young team to pick themselves up and come back to get the victory."

Garden City would get on the board first in the 19th minute as Jack Mataibo found the net on a strike. Laramie County had an opportunity to equalize in the first half but Matt Wren (Welwyn, England) has his penalty kick saved by Broncbuster goalkeeper Matt Tomlinson. GCCC would lead 1-0 at the half.

In the 52nd minute goalkeeper Brady Mangel (Thornton, Colorado) found Cirbo on a punt for the equalizing goal. Cirbo would net the game-winning score in the 75th minute on a pass from Tommy Swainson (Cheyenne, Wyoming) to give the Golden Eagles the edge.

Laramie County was on the attack all afternoon, outshooting GCCC in shots on goal, 9-3, while LCCC took 18 shots total. Cirbo posted four of his six attempts on target, while five other Golden Eagles fired away a SOG. Mangel earned the nod between the posts and stopped three shots. The Golden Eagles also held a 7-4 advantage in corner kicks.

For Mangel and Swainson, it was their first assist of their career.

LCCC will look for back-to-back wins when it takes on Victor Valley College (CA) at 8 p.m. in Las Vegas, Nevada. On Saturday the Golden Eagles will square off against host College of Southern Nevada at 8 p.m.
