Cheyenne, WY - On the heels of it best season in three decades the Laramie County Community College men's basketball team collected multiple post-season awards. The Eagles finished the season with an overall record of 23-11 including a 12-4 record in Region IX South play. Laramie County claimed the Region IX South regular season championship, their third since joining the conference in 2009, and advanced to the 16-team Region IX Tournament as the #1 seed from the South Sub-Region. The team advanced to the tournament finals falling to the host team Gillette College 101-97.
As a result Dominik Heinzl (SO; C; Uzov, Czech Republic) earned All-Region IX 1st Team honors. In 34 games this season Heinzl averaged 12.6 points per game connecting on over 54% of his field goal attempts. In addition he led the team in rebounding with 6.6 rebounds per contest. Heinzl established himself as one of the region's most potent low post scorers routinely drawing double team defense by opponents in order to defend him.
Joining Heinzl on the All-Region Team is Da'Zhon Wyche (FR, PG; Anchorage, AK) who earned All-Region IX 2nd Team honors. In 33 games this season Wyche averaged as team leading 17.2 points, 5.6 assists, and 2.1 steals per game. He finished the season with an impressive 2.1:1 assist-to-turnover ratio. Wyche proved to be the most potent scoring/set up man in the region accounting for over 28 points per game when considering his points and assist together.
LCCC Head Coach Jason Ficca was chosen as the Region IX South Coach of the Year. He also won the award following the 2009-10 season. Since joining the South Sub-Region eight seasons ago LCCC has an overall record of 159-98 including a 69-36 mark in conference play. This year's regular season crown is the third the Eagles have won since joining the South Sub-Region. They won the title outright in 2010 and tied for the regular season title in 2011 with Lamar Community College.
In addition to those season long awards three members of the squad were named to the Region IX All-Tournament Team. Dominik Heinzl added to his All-Region award by averaging 14.8 points and 8.3 rebounds while shooting 63% from field in four tournament games. Da'Zhon Wyche also doubled up on post-season awards by averaging 18.5 points and 7.3 assist per contest during the tournament. Ola Ayodele (SO; SF; London, England) earned All-Tournament honors by averaging 13.3 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 3.5 assists per game while shooting nearly 67% from the field during the tournament.
